illuminated objects...

regarding this candle, i think matt kahn would say something along the lines of, "and some of you may not realize this, but this piece intimates an art movement called [pause] dada [overenunciated]."

i've been looking at a lot of lighting and can't stop thinking about art 160 projects: illuminated objects, utilitarian lighting devices, pieces where change is a major interest, blahblahblah. i think i will forever more see the world in terms of potential art projects.

and who would have thought that corrugated cardboard could do this? giles miller uses "fluting" (alternating the direction of the corrugations) to make these designs:

i wonder if there's more to it than that.

here's a lamp whose angle is adjusted with a magnet on the outside of the belljar... i like how pseudo-scientific it feels with the clinical distance between the lamp and the user.

Ben Schittler

stumbled across the online portfolio of one ben schlitter. as far as i can tell, he's a graphic designer looking for work, but i appreciated some of his packaging designs nonetheless...

"a cd compilation that contains only songs with titles that are in the form of a question. The CD is packaged on a printed clip board, a device commonly used when answering questions. Behind the CD are two pages containing the song names in the form a questionnaire."

book covers: part one

i have been following a couple book cover design blogs. here's some that i don't want to forget about.

smart guys date in parallel

"...And with that simple metaphor, I suddenly felt much better about how things are going in my life right now. Dads are awesome."

a funny treatise on dating from a computer science guy... it made me think of my dad, i guess. so i put it up.

rembrandt redesign

saw the rembrandt rebrand in target the other day. literally stopped me in my tracks and i made diana listen to me babbling about how i thought it was cool for a few minutes. love the simplicity of the dimpled form in front and center (actually a cutaway to colored tab); think its meant to reference a smile? the inside of the box is also colored-- nice colors, right?-- with a slogan on the inside flap.... and i thought it was great that that "nutritional facts" box of medicinal info is on the bottom.

the old one:

alexandre bettler

I had thought about doing this for a while-- all part of my strange liking for office supplies. A book made from the inners of confidential envelopes:

alexandre bettler in london. his site is kinda awesomely lo-fi. i like the highlighted text as links. he also has some other projects up there:

typewriting keyboard

a guy decides to remake his computer keyboard with typewriter buttons. F1 through 12 are done with roman numerals... he put up a tutorial.

Pulp Art

I first saw Thomas Allen's stuff in Zoetrope's fall 06 issue. can't say i've seen anything like it before, but it reminds me of an address book that i have. i think what tickles me the most is his using the spines and sides of the book--the pages edges are the best colors ever. One day, i'll get around to scanning in some good ones from the magazine...

Levi's | Dangerous Liason

twentyseventeen

"Lucy and Sarah are friends from high school and now attend colleges three time zones apart. They were going to start a magazine in 2017. They started a tshirt company for now."

"The Librarian"

It seemed appropriate to start off with a twentyseventeen post. we've sold 20 shirts on our etsy site and i already feel like our production levels are maxed out. it's about time to get more of the designs up and selling; le metro, ampersand, air mail, the font shirts i want to make...

an explanation

i need a file cabinet for all the things that i've found.
